Rose

ROSE
dedicated to my grandmother, Rose Gonzalez

I edited this film using color 8mm footage of my grandparents getting married back in 1948. The family thought this footage descentigrated and that they had sent me a roll of my grandfather tossing the football.
Editing and coloring this film was a sort of existential experience, gazing into before it all started, my parents, or any of my aunts or uncles; seeing my grandparents young and passionate and those that were close with them. I'm glad I'm able to share such a rich and beautiful portrait of my family.

I have a few other short films I'm editing using my family's archive of original super 8mm footage. Stay tuned at STALAGMITE.TV

No Age 3D poster

Today I worked on a poster-making workshop with Girl Skateboards' art department, The Art Dump.
I've been subliminally influenced by their graphic sense for the past 12 years of my life as a skateboarder.
Here's a poster I made using an old photo I shot of No Age at the Smell a while back. It turned out kinda 3D*. (*it works better with red on your right eye) Ultra limited edition, (1/1).

premiere of "OUTSIDE IN"

I've basically been living at the Moca exhibit, "Art In The Streets" for the past two months or so.

I had the pleasure of watching the walls go from white to 'taggedthefuckup' and saw shipments come in and become installations; and was able to document some of that with director Alex Stapleton and Doomsday for the documentary "OUTSIDE IN".

A lot of interesting moments with an amazing line-up of artists will be included in this documentary,
which is premiering at the Egyptian Theatre on May 24, 2011.

COME TO THE PREMIERE! RSVP HERE!

*BONUS EVENT:
Some music videos I shot with Vice Cooler and Rich Dorato, including Male Bonding "Years Not Long" will be screening at a showcase of VC's vids, Saturday 5/21/11
with performance by SFV Acid and The Urxed (Rob of High Places) at Dem Passwords.

Life Is A Series Of Treats in MODERN DOG Magazine!

Toward the end of 2010, my friend Walt Gorecki asked me if I'd put together a video for an art show at Echo Curio and I joked "Only if it can be shot entirely by my dog". He said "Ok that sounds great", so that's literally what I did.

Recently, MODERN DOG Magazine shared the film we made.
I'm proud to own and work with such a 'Modern Dog'. Good job, Laika.

Placebo "Trigger Happy Hands"

At some point last year, I met Swedish director Andreas Nilsson, and was blown away by his MGMT video for "Flash Delirium".
I told him I'd love to help out if he was ever shooting in LA, and in less than a week I was shooting B-cam and camera assisting on this short film he was directing with the band Placebo and lots of clowns.
It was a great experience working with Andreas and Streetgang/Furlined.

Here's the finished video:

Videoskin @ Mastadon Mesa

I'm part of a new Mastadon Mesa art show at Pacific Design Center, happening now.

I'm doing a video-installation called "VIDEOSKIN", featuring several TVs framing various body parts and skintones, cutting intermittently...you can see it in person, or here's another attempt at explaining it:

new release: Shunda K "I'm Da Best"

I recently traveled to Tampa, Florida and directed a music video for Shunda K of Yo! Majesty.

Shunda K "I'm Da Best" music video from Steven Andrew Garcia on Vimeo.
This is my first hip-hop video, and her first single off her first solo album. My friends Erica Coronado and Brian Lichtenberg helped me out with the wardrobe and Ian Hamrick (of MIA's "Born Free") plays one of the characters. Hopefully it inspires kids that are hated-on and harassed that it's ok to be themselves.
feel free to repost if you like it...here's a "poster"

I'm about midway through production on a new music video I'm directing/shooting for Shunda K's new single "I'm Da Best" featuring Shon B.
We shot the performance and cutaway shots on location in Tampa, Florida and will be shooting additional narrative in Los Angeles in January.

Here's a little article about what we're doing with it:

Pitchfork's top videos of 2010

Pitchfork recently listed their favorite music videos of the year, and I'm stoked that the Male Bonding video I shot was among the lineup with so many other amazing videos.

I had fun working on videos with Vice Cooler this year and Male Bonding has become one of my favorite bands.

Kit "Rain" video premiered via Fader Mag

Today, The Fader Magazine premiered the brand new Kit music video I shot, "Rain", directed by Vice Cooler, (who also plays drums in Kit.)

This video was shot in all one take, handheld, no camera assistant, on a day with record-heat in Los Angeles. The kids in the video are all in other bands including Moses Campbell, Signals, Heller Keller, Foot Village, and others.

welcome to THE MASSES

If you're not familiar with The Masses already, I'll simplify by saying it's a music video/commercial production company in LA, full of good, talented people.
They recently called me in and asked me if I'm interested in working on some projects under "The Masses Lab", a new division of the company, I signed a one-year directing contract with them and I'm excited to announce that I'll now be directing videos through The Masses!

I'll still be doing cinematography and photography freelance (call me), but hopefully also directing many new projects in the coming months.

Frankie Rose & The Outs "Candy" music video

Vice Cooler is bangin out videos left and right. This is the third one we've collaborated on, with Rich Dorato aka Who Ate My Teeth.
This time around for Frankie Rose & The Outs "Candy", VC went for a goth prom/Carrie scenario shot at the Smell, starring Frankie Rose as the bloody prom queen, VC, Mike Vidal, and others as the unsuspecting victims.
Premiered via Pitchfork:
